Peter Ndegwa Clarifies Safaricom’s Role in Digitizing SHA System

Peter Ndegwa Clarifies Safaricom’s Role in Digitizing SHA System

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa has outlined the telecommunications company’s role in the Social Health Authority (SHA) initiative, emphasizing that its responsibilities are focused on facilitating the SHA system digital transformation. Addressing concerns about the scope of Safaricom’s involvement, Ndegwa clarified that their efforts aim to enhance healthcare access through advanced technological solutions.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s Power Talk, Ndegwa highlighted the company’s vision of improving healthcare service delivery by leveraging its expansive 4G infrastructure and technological expertise.

“The whole thing about UHC (Universal Health Coverage) is a very expansive program. Our role is the digitisation element. For instance, we’re responsible for ensuring that when you register for SHA, you get the right experience and that the digitisation process is successful,” he stated.

How Safaricom Contributes to SHA

The SHA program, which aims to provide Universal Health Coverage (UHC) to all Kenyans, relies on modern technology to achieve its goals. Safaricom plays a key role by digitizing the registration process and equipping healthcare workers with essential tools. The company also extends its 4G network to remote areas, ensuring healthcare providers can use digital solutions effectively.

“For doctors, nurses will need tablets and we provide that. Many of the hospitals need 4G coverage, especially in remote areas. We’re involved in the whole digitization and it’s a 10-year program.”

By focusing on these areas, Safaricom ensures that healthcare facilities can deliver services seamlessly.

Payment Model and Accountability

Ndegwa emphasized that Safaricom only receives payment after completing its assigned tasks. This performance-based model guarantees that taxpayers receive value for their money.

“It’s about completing our scope, and then taking it to the government to assess if we did a good job and then we get paid. Up to now, we have not been paid a cent up to now and we have been working for a year,” he added.

The CEO believes that digitizing healthcare processes will empower patients and enhance the efficiency of hospitals.

“My personal view is that when the process is fully digitised, patients are fully empowered, hospitals are fully enabled to use digital, and it will be a fantastic system.”

Safaricom’s Track Record in Digital Transformation

Safaricom has a history of supporting large-scale digital initiatives in Kenya. These projects, which span both the private and public sectors, have proven the company’s capacity to handle complex assignments. The SHA initiative builds on this legacy, demonstrating Safaricom’s commitment to leveraging technology for public good.

“When the processes are fully digitized, when the hospitals are fully enabled, when the patients are fully empowered, it will be a fantastic system.”

Challenges in the SHA Rollout

Despite its successes, Safaricom has encountered challenges in implementing the SHA system. Some counties report low registration rates, while others face difficulties transitioning from manual to digital processes. However, the company remains committed to addressing these obstacles. By collaborating with the government and other stakeholders, Safaricom aims to ensure the program’s long-term success.

Looking to the Future

The SHA program, supported by Safaricom’s digital expertise, promises to transform healthcare delivery in Kenya. By providing digital tools, expanding internet coverage, and streamlining registration processes, the initiative is setting the stage for a more efficient and inclusive healthcare system.

Additionally, the partnership between the government and Safaricom underscores the importance of leveraging technology for development. With continued efforts, the SHA initiative could serve as a model for other nations striving to achieve universal health coverage.
